While the unemployment rate in Franklin County stands at 5.4-percent, many residents are still struggling to recover from the recession. Additionally, in Franklin County, 3,000 residents have lost or will lose their Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefit as a result of the programs’ expiration on December 28, 2013.

County officials are preparing to move forward with the purchase of a 22.9-acre site in Columbus, on the County’s west side, on which to co-locate the Franklin County jail, (currently located at 370 S. Front Street in Downtown Columbus) and the County’s Morgue facility (located on the Ohio State University’s campus at 520 King Avenue).

Today, following several weeks of budget hearings, which began in November, Franklin County Commissioners approved the County’s 2014 Annual Operating Budget.

Today, Franklin County Administrator Don L. Brown will kick off the County’s 2014 Budget Hearings with a presentation of the entire 2014 Recommended Budget to the County Commissioners at 1 pm in the Commissioners’ Hearing Room (373 S. High Street) on the 26th Floor.

In celebration of America Recycles Day, Commissioners have rolled-out a partnership this week with Eartha Limited and AVI Foodsystems to add the recycling of organic materials in the Ben Franklin Café, located on the 16th Floor of the Government Tower (373 S. High Street), to the county’s collection of green initiatives.
