Today the Franklin County Commissioners dedicated and renamed the Franklin County Annex Building (410 S. High St.) in honor of Franklin County Sheriff James A. Karnes.

April is Fair Housing Month in Franklin County and this year, Franklin County Commissioners and the Columbus Urban League are partnering to remind the community that the Federal Fair Housing Act, signed into law on April 11, 1968, makes it unlawful to discriminate in housing transactions based on race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disability, or family status.

During Saturday’s Earth Day celebrations at Franklin Park Conservatory, Franklin County Commissioner John O’Grady and Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman announced the organizations selected to receive support for community gardening projects this spring.

Today, Franklin County Commissioners joined Consider Biking’s 2 by 2012 initiative and encouraged employees to start biking to work, school or for errands twice a month by Columbus’ Bicentennial in 2012.

Nationally, three million reports of child abuse and neglect are made every year. In Ohio, every ten minutes a child is abused and here in Franklin County, 8,562 cases of child abuse and neglect were reported in 2010.

On Saturday, April 16, 2011, the Franklin County Gantz Road community gardens will open at 9 a.m. for the 2011 growing season.

Franklin County, the City of Columbus, and Brown and Prairie Township officials unveiled the Darby Accord Town Center Master Plan last evening to a crowd gathered at the Prairie Township Firehouse.

Today, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners held an administrative session to discuss the possible outcomes and follow-up from the recent Columbus Region Business Development Mission to India, led by Franklin County Commissioner John O’Grady and Columbus 2020.

Due to excessive rain, flooding, high winds, and tornadoes that occurred from February 2-March 23, 2011, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Thomas Vilsack designated much of Central Ohio, including Franklin County as a natural disaster area.

As warmer weather quickly approaches, Franklin County Commissioners are encouraging residents to be prepared for the severe weather, including thunderstorms, lightning, flooding and tornados, that accompany Spring.
