COMMISSIONERS’ STATEMENT ON YESTERDAY’S ATTACK AT THE U.S. CAPITOL

The attack yesterday on the U.S. Capitol Building is an attack on our democracy and on the constitution itself.  It was incited by the president and perpetrated by people who are trying to take control of our nation’s government by force.  It is an attempted coup.

There was also violence again yesterday in Central Ohio, as some of the president’s supporters clashed with members of our community at the Ohio Statehouse.  This is intolerable, and we will stand with our partners in state government, at the City of Columbus, and in other local governments to both protect the rights of protesters and also to maintain order.

We are praying for the continued safety of the Ohio and Franklin County delegations to Congress.  The rule of law and the orderly transition of power are hallmarks of our democracy, and we insist that our representatives in Congress help us to uphold these ideals at all costs.
